ELLEN JEFFERY
Looking through another person’s photos, we tend to flick through one at a time and when we see something we like, we’ll stop and say “Oh, who took this one?”
My vision is for all of my works to be “Oh” photos.
With portraits, every subject wants to look special and usually glamorous. I want them to look genuine and honest. Each shoot is a challenge and an inspiration. A great photo cannot be rushed and yet can be lost in a second. A slight tilt of the head or curl of the lips can be gone forever if not captured at that moment in time.
I understand that most people are uncomfortable in front of a camera so they are vulnerable and nervous. As a photographer I have to win their trust in a very short space of time. When all is lost, second to life, photographs are what are mourned the most. With this knowledge I feel privileged each time I take a photo.
